** DG PLANS DCE SERVICES
(OST, 3/15/93, pg. 103)
DG announced plans to ship products based on OSF's DCE technology for
DG's Aviion workstations. DG will ship a set of DCE core services priced at
$2,950 by the third quarter of this year and include support for DCE remote
procedure call, timing, threads, directory and security services.

** DIGITAL, MITSUBISHI NEGOTIATE ACCORD TO MAKE U.S.
COMPANY'S ALPHA CHIP
(WSJ, 3/16/93, pg. B8)
DEC said it is negotiating an agreement with Mitsubishi under which the
Japanese company would manufacture DEC's new Alpha computer chip for sale
to other computer companies. DEC began selling workstations built around
Alpha in November and the Alpha chip is now available in most of DEC's
computer lines. However, those machines are expected to account for only
about 10% of DEC's 1993 sales.
277.
** GROUP MAY CHALLENGE DEC's UNIFIED UNIX. NOVELL/USL,
HP, IBM, SUN SAID TO BE PLANNING COMMON UNIX APIs
(DNR, 3/15/93, pg. 1)
The "group" was trying late last week to find enough common ground to
announce their own definition of a "unified unix". The effort has been dubbed
the Common Operating System Interface initiative and seeks to define a set of
APIs that would be supported by each vendor's version of Unix.
278.
** OPENVMS CLUSTERS NOW SUPPORT ALPHA AXP
(DNR, 3/15/93, pg. 1)
Beating its promised delivery date by more than a year, DEC last week
announced full open VMS clustering support for all of its Alpha AXP systems
and included support for key cluster features, including automatic failover and
dual porting.
279.
** DEC CEMENTS REORG PLAN
(DNR, 3/15/93, pg. 1)
In regrouping around a cluster of five industry and four product focused
business units, the company has sought to reduce redundancies in design,
manufacturing, and other processes to cut overhead and speed the delivery of
new products to market. Support for DEC's business unit strategy is far from
unanimous, as some observers suggest that the contracting process, as DEC
calls it, is a formula for wasted effort.
280.
** DEC TO UPGRADE MIPS LINE
(OST, 3/15/93, pg. 4)
DEC , by mid- to late spring, is planning an upgrade of its Mips-based R4000
technology. One system, the DECstation 5000/260, will use a 60-MHz R4000
RISC processor. DEC also plans to offer 50- and 60- MHz daughtercards for
upgrading existing DECstations. DEC's highest performing DECstation to date
is the 5000 Model 240, rated at 43 MIPS.

** TESTED METTLE HP 9000/735 CRX
(UR, 4/93, pg. 53)
Like its predecessors, the 735 CRX is the fastest workstation of its time. All
that power isn't cheap but it's worth the price. Moving from a 735 to another
workstation means enduring a drop in responsiveness that is readily apparent.
The report card includes outstanding ratings in installation, documentation,
expandability, operation, OS/ease of use, performance, and price/performance.
For support, the rating was good.
[ Editor's note: This is a great article if you are competing against the
SPARCstation 10 Model 41, the RS/6000 Model 350, the SGI R4000, or the
DECstation 5000/240. This article is too long to fax, but if you send your
mailing address, I'll mail it.]
282.
** HP PROPOSES TO EXTEND TELNET STANDARD
(OST, 3/15/93, pg. 10)
HP last week introduced a new technology aimed at increasing the processing
efficiency of the TCP/IP Telnet network transport application. HP's proposed
extension to the Internet Engineering Task Force's Telnet standard would
reduce both the number of Telnet packets and the associated TCP/IP
networking traffic.
283.
** OPEN SYSTEMS: THE DEMOCRATIC IDEAL. HP VICE PRESIDENT
'WIM' ROELANDTS DISCUSSES THE PROS AND CONS OF THE OPEN
SYSTEMS MOVEMENT
(OST, 3/15/93, pg. 52)
Wim's comments include "Clearly the problems of IBM have offered a
tremendous opportunity for HP. There's absolutely no doubt about it. For a
very simple reason: look at who is the logical alternative...we are the logical
alternative.
[ Editor's note: Wim discusses NT, USL/Novell, DCE, IBM and SUN.]

284.
** HAVING YOUR CAKE AND SELLING IT , TOO
(BW, 3/22/93, pg. 32)
Big Blue is convinced that a sale of workstation stock would be a bell-ringer.
But disentangling IBM's cross-pollinating business activities is a puzzle and
the Securities and Exchange Commission requires three years of audited results
in a subsidiary before it can peddle stock. IBM set up its present 13 business
units in December, 1991, and has never done separate audits of them.
285.
** NAVIGATING THE AS/400 PORT
(MS, 3/9/93, pg. 1)
By July 2, AS/400 customers will be able to use an IBM implementation of Sun
Microsystems' Network File System (NFS). This is significant because
customer investments in multisystem data, hardware and software are protected
through enhanced interoperability between the AS/400 and other platforms on a
network.
286.
** ADVANCED WORKSTATIONS AND SYSTEMS (AWS) WEATHERS
THE STORM. WORKSTATION LINE OF BUSINESS PROVES THERE'S
HOPE FOR IBM
(MS, 3/9/93, pg. 17)
1992 RS/6000 sales by geographic location comprise North America 40%,
Europe 43%, Asia Pacific 13% and Latin America 4%. Sales by channel
include business partners 48%, direct 46%, and OEM 6%.
287.
** POWER PC BASED SYSTEMS PLANNED
(OST, 3/15/93, pg. 5)
Apple, Bull, Harris, IBM and Thomson CSF plan to ship systems based on the
IBM RS/6000 chip and running operating system software called PowerOpen.
PowerOpen offers binary support for Apple Macintosh, IBM AIX and Uni/XT
applications. Apple and Bull have targeted next year for delivering a system,
and IBM and Thomson CSF expect to have some products available this year.
288.
** DB2 FOR RS/6000 IMMINENT
(OST, 3/15/93, pg. 18)
IBM is set to announce DB2/6000, a version of its DB2 relational database
management system for the RS/6000. DB2/6000 will run applications created
on the four other platforms for which DB2 is available with some slight
modifications. DB2 data on those other platforms, as well as in other vendors'
relational databases, will be accessible via IBM's DRDA (Distributed Relational
Database Architecture) API.

NCR ARTICLES

289.
** NCR's COMPUTING VISION: 'RECYCLE & EMPOWER'
(NC, 3/93, pg. 11)
"Recycle & Empower" involves reviewing a company's business processes,
objectives, and the current information technology environment. The process
focuses on retaining the best of the current information technology and
augmenting that to better align it with the business objectives. The process is
facilitated by NCR's Systems Services Division.
290.
** '92 WAS A GOOD YEAR FOR NCR
(NC, 3/93, pg. 14)
NCR has instituted a new concept for its local offices. Salesmen and systems
engineers are soon to work from a "virtual office, " their home and car, using
NCR 3170 laptop systems with all the bells and whistles attached.

** IN RISKY STEP, SUN REVEALS PROJECTIONS FOR SPARC CHIP
(OST, 3/15/93, pg. 1)
Seeking to counter criticisms that its SPARC chip has run out of gas, Sun this
week is taking the unusual step of outlining a five-year SPARC performance
road map, one that has a 64-bit SPARC chip performing at nearly 2,000
SPECint92 in 1998. Sun is hoping that by projecting its performance for
several years, it will allay any concerns customers might have about hooking up
with the company for the long term. Sun also hopes to lessen the impact of
negative marketing campaigns that its competitors, particularly HP, have aimed
at SPARC.
292.
** PRICE HIKE FOR OLDER SPARCSTATIONS
(OST, 3/15/93, pg. 19)
Among the systems to be discontinued in October are the SPARCstation ELC
and IPC and Cypress/Ross CPU modules for the SPARCserver 600MP series.
Sun said the decline in demand for those products has increased their
production costs. The SPARCstation 2 will continue to be produced but prices
on it will be raised as well.
293.
** THIS JUST IN
(SE, 3/93, pg. 16)
If you order before March 19, you can get the latest Sun promotion. Depending
on how many SPARCstation 10 Model 30 full systems you order, SMCC is
throwing in for free all kinds of peripherals, memory and even full systems.

** BULL'S SMP SOFTWARE
(RSM, 3/93, pg. 10)
Beta sites to test Groupe Bull's symmetrical multiprocessing software using
IBM's 601 Power chip are under way. Bull is aiming for general delivery in the
final quarter of this year of its SMP software, which is also expected to
feature the lower OSI networking stacks for communications.
295.
** NOVELL MAY SHIP ITS NETWARE 4.0 BY END OF MONTH
(WSJ, 3/11/03, pg. B6)
Analysts said that the system's high price and new software architecture could
slow initial sales. Novell's pricing for its new system - ranging from $1,395
for a five user package to $47,995 for a system accommodating 1,000 users - is
25% higher than the company's 3.11 system.
296.
** FUJITSU EXPECTS TO POST A LOSS IN CURRENT YEAR
(WSJ, 3/15/93, pg. A9B)
Fujitsu now becomes the second major Japanese electronics company to
forecast a loss for the current year. NEC was the first. Fujitsu blazed a trail
as Japan's home grown answer to IBM and by 1980, Fujitsu had wrested the lead
position in the Japanese computer market from IBM.
297.
** EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
(IW, 3/8/93, pg. 8)
ASK says it plans to expand its software applications through acquisition. Last
week the firm launched a software development tools group to help corporate
users speed applications development.
298.
** TREND SETTERS
(CIO, 3/93, pg. 18)
The Gartner Group projects these trends over the next few years: client/server
will become the mainstream technology. Openness will be defined by "how
you build" not "what you buy". IBM's sphere of influence will implode, users
will be on their own, and middleware will be king. Power will shift from
hardware vendors to software vendors. Cost reduction will continue to push
information technology into application "right-sizing".
299.
** UNIX TO NT CONVERSION SOFTWARE PROMISED
(OST, 3/15/93, pg. 4)
The DataFocus product, to be called Nutcracker, will convert about 95 percent
of Unix source code to a form that can run on Windows NT's WIN32 APIs,
with the remainder still needing to be recoded by hand.
